Working hard

I was working in our groups in one of my schools today and I realized that there are so many different kinds of kids and lots of kids who have gone through many experiences, some they shouldn’t even have. Since the program I am in deals with kids who might not have the motivational support at home, I meet kids who may have had a troubled past.

I forgot how it came up, I think we were talking about birthdays, and one of the girls said

Girl1: “oh, ____(whichever month it was)___, that was my brother’s birthday.”

Girl2: “Waaaaaaaas?”

Girl1: <completing problem on board> “yeah, was. He’s dead now. He died in January.”

Me: @_@……..I’m…sorry….

Girl “Yeah, it’s okay. That’s why I’m always sad” <shrugs>

Wow…..and she’s one of my favorite girls now. Not only that, she wants to work in the police force and become a CSI agent. Why? She likes David Caruso and his character, Horacio Caine on CSI: Miami. In fact, her friends call her Horacio and that’s how she introduced herself. She said related to him because he lost his parents at a young age…….. at any rate, through all that she’s been through, I was really happy she was here with me and I thought she was doing really well and was extremely nice and patient. She even explained how her hands were dirty (and there were reeeeally dirty) because she was working on her dirt bike this morning. Dirt bike?!?! She also goes to the shooting range to practice her shooting, and likes to draw guns. Totally my girl. What a cool cat.

No Elmo in my house

1

This morning I was eating my cereal (Honey Bunches of Oats with Strawberry) and flipping through the channels like I do for breakfast..and I stopped on Elmo holding a voilin. I thought “oh yay, Elmo is going to play the violin. How great that he’s playing music for kids.” So Elmo says “okay! I’m going to play my faaaavorite song I like to play on my viooolin! It’s the violin song! Yaaaay! Hahahaha” So by now I’m getting pumped..oooh a violin song! I wonder if he’s going to sing.

So he starts playing this song. “Vi-o-liiiiin, vi-o-liiiiin, vi-o-vi-o-liiiiiiin….”

……

What the heck….this isn’t some violin song…this is JINGLE BELLS!….and all he’s doing is substituting the lyrics with the word violin over and over again….

What is up Elmo? You couldn’t come up with your own music? Now young kids all over who don’t know any better are going to hear that song during December, and say to their friends during school “Hey…that’s the violin song! I learned it from Elmo!” and when their peers try to tell them it’s just Jingle Bells, they’re going to be devastated that Elmo LIED to them. Lied. Fantastic.

This is why I liked Blue from Blue’s Clues sooooo much better. What a smart dog!
